This trek is a wonderful introduction to the mountains of Nepal, or for those with limited time, as it’s the perfect length – just over a week long. It is a stunningly beautiful trek, taking you up through ancient rhododendron forests, to what feels like the face of the mountains themselves, as you get up close and personal with Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, Machhapuchhre, Gangapurna, Annapurna I and Mardi Himal.
Situated just east of the Annapurna Base Camp trek, the Mardi Himal trek is a hidden gem, as few trekkers make their way to Mardi Himal’s Base Camp, spectacularly situated at the base of Mardi Himal and the beautiful and imposing Machhapuchhre or Fishtail. The trail winds along small paths through ancient rhododendron forests, until you climb out at around 3,300m. Here, the landscape changes quite abruptly with amazing views of Mardi Himal, Machhapuchhre, Annapurna South and Hiunchuli. From High Camp (3,580m) you can climb in about 3-4 hours to Mardi Himal Base Camp, which offers spectacular close up views of the entire Annapurna Range. There is also an amazing viewpoint approx 2 hours from High Camp.
Itinerary
Fly to Pokhara (25 mins), drive to Khande and walk to Pitam Deurali
We'll fly from Kathmandu to Pokhara in 20 minutes, then drive 45 minutes to the start point, where we'll begin our trek with a difficult ascent through the jungle, passing through local communities until we reach Australian Camp, our lunch stop. We will be able to witness amazing vistas of the Annapurna mountain range if the weather is clear. After lunch, a gradual rise leads us to Pitam Deurali, where we will spend the night.
Pitam Deurali to Forest Camp (2,500m/7 hours).
A difficult upward journey through dense forest for the majority of the day, with stunning vistas of the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna mountains. We could be lucky enough to see some of the plentiful wildlife, which includes leopards, deer, monkeys, and a variety of bird species. In the afternoon, we arrive at Forest Camp.
Forest Camp to Badal Dada (2,970m/4 hours)
Today's hike is short, but steep, through a rhododendron and juniper forest. When you reach the top, you will be rewarded with some of Machhapuchhre's most stunning views (Fishtail Mountain).
Badal Dada to High Camp (3,580m/4 hours)
This day is also brief. We'll arrive at High Camp in time for lunch. To the north, you'll see Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, Gangapurna, Tare Kang, and Khangsar on the climb up.
High Camp, trek to Base Camp (4,450m) and back to High Camp (8 hours).
Today you'll need to get up early to see the most beautiful sunrise views of the towering Himalayas. After breakfast, we begin our ascent to the 4500-meter Mardi Himal Base Camp. It will be a difficult day traveling up tight, rocky trails, but the stunning vistas of this majestic peak will make it all worthwhile. If the weather permits, you will be able to see Annapurna I (8,091m), Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, Gangapurna, Tare Kang, Khangsar, Annapurna III, and Fish Tail up close on this day if the weather permits.
High Camp to Siding Village (1,8850m/7-8 hours)
We'll return to low camp and then head southeast through the dense jungle towards Mardi Khola from the ridge.
Drive Siding village to Pokhara and Fly to Kathmandu
On our last day, we'll hike for around 1.5 hours down to Mardi Khola, where we'll board our 2-hour bus back to Pokhara.
